Taking Stock of Your Donation
Did you know that you can give publically traded stock to United Way and receive an enhanced tax credit? Choosing this option can provide a much better tax benefit to you and your family.
In the May 2006 budget, the federal government announced that donations of publically-traded securities are exempt from capital gains tax. This means that when you make a gift of appreciated stock, you receive the benefit of a tax receipt for the market value of the stock and do not pay tax on any of the capital gain. This elimination of the capital gains tax on gifts of appreciated securities creates a significant tax advantage for donors.
